FAITHFUL & WELCOMING CHURCHES
There is exciting news! The FWC board met this past February in Cleveland at the home offices of the UCC. They had the opportunity to tour the national office, hold conversations with some of the staff, and meet the new General Minister and President, Rev. Geoffrey Black. The conversations with Rev. Black were extremely worthwhile. Rev. Black had not been familiar with the work and mission of FWC and the board was able to enlighten him.
One of the primary ways FWC is maintaining an alternative voice within the mainstream of the UCC is by helping associations to recognize that some of their member churches desire to have pastors who are either Evangelical, Conservative, Orthodox, or Traditional (ECOT) in their thinking, preaching, and leadership. Most of the mainline seminaries serving mainline churches do not produce ECOT pastors in sufficient numbers to meet the demand. Churches become frustrated trying to find a pastor. FWC is trying to bridge this gap.
The national gathering of FWC in Chicago August 6-8 will coincide with an event titled “Answering the Call.” This event is designed to call a new generation of ECOT’s to ministry in the mainline churches, including the UCC. The gathering will be a part of a larger gathering of mainline renewal groups bringing new life and hope to the church of Jesus Christ. It will be very helpful and encouraging for these potential pastors to know ECOT pastors and laity in movements like the FWC. If a member of First UCC would like to attend this event, the church will cover most expenses.

SPIRITUAL GROWTH
Thank You for 50 Days of Prayer. During the Easter season, we were invited to pray for the Christian Church in general and the First United Church of Christ in particular. These prayers had an obvious affect on the church as we saw improved attendance, welcomed new members, and felt a general spirit of caring in our midst. Thank you for your faithful support of the church through prayer. It seemed to translate into increased giving as well. See the article on “Growth in Giving” on the STEWARDSHIP page.
STEWARDSHIP
Church Change Special Offering. Your weekly donations of coins through the season of Easter added up to nearly $114. (It would have been more if Pastor Shawn hadn’t forgotten to pass out the coin can for two Sundays!) Thank you for joining with other churches in the Pennsylvania SE Conference to grow new churches and strengthen established churches. Pastor Shawn attended a meeting on May 25 where mission and evangelism resources were provided due to this offering.
Growth in Giving.
A comparative study of the April 2009 and 2010 budgets proved exciting. Our giving to support the ministry of First Church is growing! Regular offerings in 2009 were $26,246 in contrast to $30,734 in 2010. Less money was utilized from the Kline Fund as a result: $45,500 was need for the first four months of 2009 as compared to $34,900 for the same time period for 2010. Thank you for your faithful commitment to Christ’s work that we may share the Good News with all the world.
SABBATH
The word “Sabbath” in the Bible refers to the seventh day of the week (Saturday) when people rested and worshipped God. Today we may use the word Sabbath to refer to Sunday as well. The dual focus of the day was to worship and to rest. In our daily lives, finding time to rest is difficult. Yet we need that one day a week, just as we need adequate sleep each night. In setting time apart, the rest of our time is more productive and we are better able to cope with unexpected developments. When we observe the DAWG (Day Alone With God) days of summer to realign our life with God, we can know the richness and wonder of uninterrupted time with God. July is a sabbatical month at First Church, as we do not schedule any meetings but focus on sharing in the Holy Spirit through fellowship and relaxation.
Youth Matters!
Youth Matters! is for youth grades 4 through 6.
Please talk to Pastor Shawn if you have ideas for future activities and service projects.
THANK YOU NOTES from Kline Tithe
2009 Kline Tithe Distribution
At the Special Congregational Meeting on Sunday, February 21 a vote was taken for the Kline Fund Tithe Distribution. Each of the organizations chosen received the following amounts: Meals on Wheels $2112, Pinnacle Health Hospice $2112, Volunteer Home Care $1584, Schuylkill Women in Crisis $1496, Union Cemetery $880, and St. Pat’s Soup Kitchen $616. Liberty Fire, Rainbow Hose, Schuylkill Haven Food Pantry, and Schuylkill Hose each received $1100 and the Schuylkill Haven Library received $600. In the last newsletter there were thank you notes from Volunteer Home Care, Liberty Fire, St. Pat’s Soup Kitchen, Schuylkill Haven Library, and Schuylkill Women in Crisis. The following thank you notes were received since the printing of the last newsletter.
Diakon (Meals on Wheels). Your gift is so important to the ministries of Diakon. Each weekday, Schuylkill Meals on Wheels delivers delicious meals to many county residents. Because of your gift and others we are receiving, Schuylkill Meals on Wheels will continue to provide a lifeline of hope to many dealing with health issues, changes in lifestyle or other overwhelming factors. Thank you for believing in our mission. Together we can make a profound difference in the lives of those we serve – one person at a time. With many hands and one heart, we reach out, in loving response to Christ’s love, to touch the lives of people. Please accept our deepest appreciation for your loyal support. ~~Mark T. Pile, Diakon President/CEO
Pinnacle Health Hospice. Thank you so much for your most generous donation. This gift is greatly appreciated and will definitely help serve different areas of our patients’ needs. Please know that this gift will definitely enable us to continue providing the most comprehensive and individualized hospice care and services available to the terminally ill men and women and children who seek our help. Donations help to defray the cost of caring for those with limited or no insurance coverage, and enable us to assist individuals needing costly medications or high tech pain control. They also allow us to continue providing the many “little extras” so often needed to ensure our patients and families added comfort and peace of mind. In addition, donations make it possible for us to continue offering free of charge, specialized bereavement programs for area adults, children and teens. If it’s true that generosity often returns to the giver, then it’s our wish that your lives are filled with every promise and possibility. Thank you again for this contribution and for the vote of confidence it implies in our Pinnacle Health Hospice Team. ~~Lisa J. Thomas, MSW, Community Relations Manager
Union Cemetery. We are honored to know that First UCC wishes to partner with us as we continue to maintain the Union Cemetery. We cannot thank you enough for your continued support. Your donation could not came at a better time. We incurred expenses opening up and plowing the roads during the last big snow storm. The cost of burials does not cover such extraordinary expenses. We are so blessed to have friends such as you who take an active interest in helping maintain the cemetery. We are truly thankful for your timely gift and know that God will continue to bless your church as you share with others. ~~J. Daniel Reed, Board of Directors President

VBS – HIGH SEAS EXPEDITION
Welcome to the High Seas Expedition (HSE), where you’ll explore the mighty love of God! Get ready for a swashbuckling adventure through God’s Word, and discover that God show his powerful love throughout Scripture. HSE is awash with fun for kids, teenagers, and adults. Everyone involved in this VBS will dive into God’s Word … and never be the same again! Not only do kids experience amazing Bible adventures but they’ll also watch for God in everyday life through something we call God Sightings. It’s easy to read about incredible miracles in the Bible and quietly wonder why God doesn’t do those things today. But God is active in our everyday lives … we just have to learn to look. At HSE, kids will be encouraged to look for evidence of God in things like a sunset, a rainstorm, a laugh, a kind word, a tasty snack. These things are called God Sightings, and yes, even preschoolers can make them part of life. It’s incredible … and easy. Each day, kids will be exposed to a Bible Point as well as a corresponding Bible story and Bible verse. The chart below shows the Bible content kids will cover each day.
